NeurIPS 2018: Part I

#1

From Dec 2-8 I’ll be at NeurIPS 2018 in Montreal. Here’s are some highlights after Day 1 & 2.

Tutorials
Day 1 was Tutorials day, with pretty cool talks on different topics. I really like the Unsupervised Deep Learning tutorial with Alex Graves (DeepMind) with a great overview on current state-of-the-art.

Best paper awards
Neural Ordinary Differential Equations
Ricky T. Q. Chen*, Yulia Rubanova*, Jesse Bettencourt*, David Duvenaud

NeurIPS 2018 Test of Time Award: The Trade-Offs of Large Scale Learning

Mind-blowing invited talk by Michael Levin "What Bodies Think About: Bioelectric Computation Outside the Nervous System, Primitive Cognition and Synthetic Morphology."

WiML Workshop
Annual WiML Workshop, a technical workshop for women to present their research in machine learning.

Legends I saw at the conference so far (but didn’t dare to speak to): Geoffrey Hinton, Yann LeCun, Jeff Dean, Yoshua Bengio, Ian Goodfellow
